Clintonville Local Business Spotlight: Virtue Salon
This month, we are excited to feature Virtue Salon in our Clintonville Local Business Spotlight. Melanie, Owner of Virtue Salon, recently answered some of our questions about her business and what she loves about Clintonville.
How long have you been in business?
10 years! We opened our doors on February 1, 2010.
What made you choose Clintonville?
Honestly it was completely by accident. I knew another business owner in Clintonville at the time and I liked the neighborhood so we found a space for the salon and went with it.
Looking back now, it was obviously meant to be. Virtue Salon is a vegan, eco-friendly salon that fits perfectly with the vibe felt in the neighborhood of Clintonville.
Although Clintonville is in the middle of a large city, the Clintonville community is friendly and connected which makes having a business in Clintonville extremely fun and rewarding.
What makes your business unique?
We are a true team of artists that love working together and creating together. Our salon obviously provides hair services but the true reason we exist is for bringing the community together. We exist to celebrate community and encourage individuals to be their authentic selves. You can see anyone in our space from a hipster with a mullet to a woman with naturally gray hair getting a chic bob.
Virtue Salon is a bit rebellious and we like to break the mold. About a year ago we stopped providing magazines in our space because we noticed that people looked at their phones instead. For us it was an innovative way to reduce our waste and consume less as a business. Now we have books filled with art and books written by our guests on the shelf.
Since we love connecting with other small businesses, you will find multiple partnerships happening every week in our space like pour over coffee from Roaming Goat or a local artist selling their prints. On Friday’s and Saturday’s, you will find food trucks out front too!
What is your favorite thing about doing business in Clintonville?
The most exciting thing about doing business in Clintonville is the new growth of small businesses. It is obvious that the amount of independent small business is increasing constantly which makes the community in Clintonville vibrant and authentic.
Since our focus is building community, we love partnering and connecting with other small businesses that are making a difference and providing jobs for the people.
As an eco-friendly, vegan business we feel at home in Clintonville because we are surrounded by likeminded people.
What is the best piece of advice you would give to an aspiring local, small business owner?
- Start Small and grow authentically.
- Get a mentor that owns a business. It is lonely without someone who gets it!
- Take care of your team! Listen to them, see them and celebrate them.
- Take time away from the business on purpose on a regular basis.
- Put yourself on payroll even it is a small amount!
