Clintonville Local Business Spotlight: Johnny Velo Bikes

This month, we are excited to feature Johnny Velo Bikes in our Clintonville Local Business Spotlight. We reached out to John Robinson, Owner of Johnny Velo Bikes, to learn a bit more about the business and why he loves working in Clintonville.

How long have you been in business?

Almost a year and a half.

What made you choose your location?

I have lived in Clintonville for over 25 years and felt it was under served with a bike shop that provided the level of service and community support I felt our community deserved.

Why Clintonville?

My wife and I lived previously in German Village, and we enjoyed biking the Olentangy Bikeway. We looked for communities near the bike trail and loved Clintonville’s charm, and proximity to a great park and library system.

What makes your business unique?

We have created a bike shop whose main purpose is to just get people riding bikes. We don’t care if it is a high-end racing bike, or a cruiser to ride around the neighborhood. We just want to provide you with the best service possible and answer all of your questions.

What is your favorite thing about doing business in Clintonville?

Serving my community. I used to travel about 80% of the time and always felt disconnected to the things going on in my community. Owning a bike shop that is in such a high traffic area (Between Northstar and Hot Chicken Takeover) allows me meet to meet new people and see old friends more frequently. I can make a difference getting people to be healthier and making an impact on our environment too.

What is the best piece of advice you would give to an aspiring local, small business owner?

Plan, Plan, and Plan. I spent over two years researching the bike industry, reading everything I could, talking with bike shop owners across the country, and working in a shop on the weekends to make sure I knew the business. I talked to accountants, Service Corp of Retired Executives (SCORE), attorneys, and had a well-developed business plan that helped me secure great bike brands.

What are some of your favorite places to go in Clintonville?

I really like Lineage Brewery, Local Cantina, El Vaquero, Pat and Gracie’s, the food truck La Poblanita and Northstar Cafe.

Johnny Velo Bikes is located at 4231 N. High Street in the Clintonville neighborhood of Columbus, Ohio.
